It's great I've read it and refer to it, but the data sampling pool is so very small that it's almost a joke. Seriously, of a sampling pool of 7 winners 86% used Crystal. wow that tells me alot. ah, but it's still fun to dig into each style when formulating your own recipes.
The second half of this book is what stands out and makes it a must have. Great book for anyone who is thinking about brewing more than just pre-packaged beer kits. The chapters are divided by beer style for easy reference on what you want to try brewing. The first half of the book covers some ins and outs of brewing that you can find in several other books. I would say that it is nothing ground breaking. The chapters start with historical info on the beer style and progreses into the nuts and bolts of how to properly brew the style. Using the information that I read in this book I was able to design my own brew with ease.and it tastes better than a lot of the prepackaged kits that I've brewed.
This is the book for hombrewers ready to move into designing their own recipes (extract or all grain) An excellent "how-to" manual for recipe formulation, tips, and ingredient information. Some parts seem calculation heavy, but are actually quite simple once you get the hang of it. Part Two in the book offers detailed history, evolution, and guidelines for designing specific styles of beer. A great resource.
I have blindly mixed ingredients from other books, internet sites, but i didnt know exactly what i was doing until i go this book. It explains most of every step in making your own beer. This book is great. great learning tool and great refernece. Its technical enough to explain all aspects of the brewing process. But also easy to understand. Worth the money. Now I am close to the beer i like and I kn ow how to alter it to get it to the way i like.
This book has a ton of very useful information and is written to be understood. The author took the time to put a very nice tutorial together on a broad subject and was honest enough to convey it is not a complete account of all things. Highly recommended for the brewer that would like to take his/her brewing to the next level.
